Ah...yes. I've awoken from my holiday slumbers ready to take on yet another year. Now smell my finger & let's get busy with the fizzy, shall we?
...ooh the anticipation is unbearable. Yes, friends, it's that time again. Time for drunken debauchery, drag, queens, and watered down, over priced Hurricanes. However, it is one of the two annual must-do events in the St. Louis area....the other being St. Patrick's Day. St. Louis has traditionally held the #2 spot amongst Mardi Gras celebrations in the US until this year. New Orleans respectively held the #1 spot in the past. However, due to the unfortunate circumstances caused by Hurricane Katrina last Sept., St. Louis has been pegged to take over the reigns as the #1 spot for Mardi Gras in 2006. Now there were a few floating rumors about reducing drinking hours yet again in the Soulard area. The city of St. Louis and it's police dept. pushed for bars to close their doors at 8pm this year. However, it has been confirmed that bars will stay upon until 11pm. Liquor sales on the streets of Soulard will conclude at 8pm on Saturday, Feb. 25th - the day of the Grand Parade. There have also been discussions regarding the boundaries of the actual celebration. A handful of city officials are pushing to extend the boundaries in effort to relieve some of the congestion in Soulard, but nothing has been determined at this point. Folks in the area are gearing up as this year marks the 26th year for the Soulard Mardi Gras. The Grand Parade take place in t-minus 36 days. Dust off those beads & fluff those boas. The weather last year was beautiful and will hopefully be similar for this year's festivities. Just remember to pace yourself and bring plenty of cash, but don't blow it all on beads. Too many beads will cause whiplash-like symptoms the following day. Be sure to catch the infamous high heel drag queen race outside of Clementime's as that is one of the highlights of the afternoon. I just recently watched Dig, which is almost a co-documentary involving the members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre & the Dandy Warhols. It's a rather good flick regardless of whether or not you're a fan of either band. If you like the "genre", then it's worth a viewing. It's also yet another film that displays the cons of heroin. One-time BJM member, Peter Hayes, will be in St. Louis with his 'new' band the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on Feb. 25th. Tickets are a mere $13 at Mississippi Nights, and Elefant will also be performing. Two bands worth checking out.Well, I'm averaging a mere 1 post a month these days so tune in late Feb. Kidding....sorta.
